Designing Custom Electronics for String Instruments
impulse9 is a one-person workshop in Poland, creating advanced audio electronics for professional musicians. Every product is custom-designed and built from scratch by a single engineer.
The work comes from the idea that instruments deserve to be met on their own terms, not flattened into a standard audio workflow. A lot of music tech is built around convenience and universality, which often comes at the cost of nuance — especially when it comes to how different instruments actually behave under real playing conditions.
Instead of assuming a fixed signal model, the focus is on listening to what an instrument is already doing and shaping processing around that behavior. Small things like how harmonics build up, how dynamics collapse or open up, or how transients translate through a system matter more than abstract feature sets.
This becomes particularly important with instruments that sit outside the usual design assumptions of mainstream gear. They often reveal where standard approaches stop being expressive and start becoming restrictive.
The intent is not to “enhance” or “improve” in a generic sense, but to preserve identity while extending range — so the character of the instrument is still clearly present even when the sound is pushed into unfamiliar territory.
Design choices follow a pragmatic approach to combining analog and digital domains. Digital processing is used where it provides clear, meaningful benefit to the player — such as DSP-based shaping or control features that would be difficult or impractical to achieve otherwise. At the same time, analog design is preserved wherever it offers a more direct, transparent, or musically intuitive response.
Controls are designed around playing behavior, not as a separate interface layer. In live use, the focus is on exposing only the parameters that are actually relevant to performance, and shaping their behavior so they remain predictable and responsive under real playing conditions. The intent is to keep interaction intentional and focused, without unnecessary abstraction between the musician and the sound.
